Just Published: Boutiques de la foire / Fairgrounds by Lucien Boucher

£100.00

‘Roll up! Roll up! Step inside the dazzling world of the fairground imagined by Messieurs Boucher and Mac Orlan. Turn the pages and let yourself be carried away by the whirlwind of the rides, the clatter of tin-can alley and the scent of sugar candy, gingerbread and hot oil.’

The success of Boutiques (1925) led to a sequel the following year – Boutiques de la foire – once again featuring text by Pierre Mac Orlan and 37 enchanting autolithographs by Lucien Boucher depicting beautiful fairground rides and stalls. The edition of 500 copies, highly praised by artists and critics alike, joined Boutiques in the ranks of instant classic.

This new edition presents Boucher’s delightful images alongside newly commissioned captions by Andrew Stewart that give a fascinating insight into the 1920s world of the fairground and the many attractions depicted. In a captivating and beautifully illustrated essay, Pascal Jacob - a world expert on the circus and funfair -  discusses the tradition of the fairground in 20th-century art, early cinema and picture books, and explores Boucher’s influences alongside his lasting legacy.

Mac Orlan’s original fairground text is translated by Shaun Whiteside and accompanied by stunning 1920s photographs of Paris’s fêtes foraines taken by Mac Orlan’s friend, the photographer Marcel Bovis. We end with notes on the printing of the book by Neil Philip.
